Focus on your preganacy in a deeper way. Even if you've never practised yoga before, pregnancy is a wonderful time to begin. This class helps the partner understand what the mommies are experiencing and how they can assist them during labor. "I love helping women feel better physically and emotionally, reminding them they already know how to give birth." says Liz.

Finding Balance in Chaotic Times: A Summer to Fall Transition Practice
As the disasters and human suffering continues, we yogis, we want to respond with compassionate action. We want to contribute to the evolution of consciousness but we also want to be practical. The enormity of the crises can feel overwhelming. Many of the images we have seen can trigger our own trauma (from 9/11 or elsewhere).
At times like this, your yoga practice can really keep you centered. We must know how to fill our own well before we can be of service to others.
This time of year is crammed with archetypal energies helping us to learn the lesson of being centered and solid as the Earth. The astrological sign of Virgo teaches us the practical side of service: to care for our daily health, to release clutter and to concentrate on the vital. Libra teaches us the lesson of finding center to balance out the extremes. The Taoist Five Element Earth Season is an opportunity to refocus and realign our goals and our balance between doing and being. Are we nourished (physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually)? What inner guidance can we summon to make wiser choices? What persistent loops of thought and feeling prevent us from receiving satisfaction from what we have?
Nature’s ferocity, like the power of Pele or the fury of Durga, also contains the seeds of compassion. The Great Mother of Humanity dwells in the darkness of human nature; warms the hearts of all who are homeless; and flushes out our collective shadow for all to see. Bringing the darkness of our natures into awareness so that we can heal is the true heart and soul of yoga.
September is full of feast days celebrating the Universal Mother. Buddhists honor Sarasavti, the goddess of wisdom, who protects and nurtures creation. The Russian Orthodox Church remembers Sophia as “the tabernacle of wisdom”. Catholics celebrate St. Sophia and her three daughters Faith, Hope and Charity. The Sorrows of Mary are holy days that connect us to the strength to endure and love what is good, true and beautiful. The ancient Greeks celebrated the Great Mother, Demeter, with the Eleusian Mysteries (they began on the night I am writing this, the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox). The revelation of the mystery came on the final day after six days of fasting and silence nourished the seed of wisdom. The revelation came as gnosis (divine knowledge), mystical (divine love) and magical (divine service). This is an opportunity to nourish your own seed of wisdom and to polish the many facets of that wisdom in your thoughts, your words and your actions.

Asana of the Month – Salabhasana
(The Locust or Grasshopper)
Horizontal backbends use more support than standing backbends. Therefore, they are highly effective for evenly distributing prana in the upper and lower body and for flushing out stagnant energy in the spleen/pancreas meridian and digestive organs. They promote good digestion, strengthen the back extensors and are powerful detoxifiers. When done correctly, they can relieve sciatica. There are many Biblical associations with locusts and the end of days. In meeting the locust , we come to know something of its magic and perhaps digest its wisdom.
1. Lie face down on the floor with your palms, forehead and navel center plugged into the Earth.
2. Pull your abdominal muscles in and up. Lengthen the spine and out the crown and feet. Relax your buttocks to a minimum contraction and begin to lift the head , upper torso off the floor. Exhale lift. Inhale hold. Exhale lower. Continue expanding along the spinal axis. Keep the breath steady and smooth.
3. Repeat step 2 adding first one leg , alternate, and then both legs.
4. If you experience tension in the low back or compression in the kidneys, place a rolled blanket under your thighs and extend your energy through the pelvis and legs.
5. When performed smoothly and slowly, this pose is invaluable to a complete yoga routine. It is calming; a good warm up to other backbends; and therapeutic when done without twisting or lifting off balance. Both shoulders should be evenly off the floor. Both legs should be the same height and length. Both knees are evenly extended.
