NEW CLASS at NAMASTE
Active Restorative Yoga with Nechemiah Bar-Yehuda Mondays 4:00-6:00pm all levels
This class is inspired by Anusara yoga, Kinetic Awareness and Meditation practices. It takes you from dynamic, invigorating postures, through restorative and rejuvenating poses into deep release on balls of various sizes and levels of firmness. You glide naturally into spontaneous meditation.
Nechemiah Bar-Yehuda began teaching yoga in his Jerusalem studio in 1979. He has a Masters in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica and numerous certifications as a teacher of yoga and meditation and body/mind healing. For more than 20 years, he has studied Kabbalah, the Tantric Philosophy of Kashmir Shaivism, the scriptures of Classical yoga and Vedanta. He brings his love and insight of the complementary practical application of those scriptures into his teaching.
We welcome Nechemiah to Namaste.

YOGA - WINTER'S GIFT
Classical yoga and Taoism both provide teachings on the energies of the changing seasons. A yoga practice based on utilizing these cosmic forces restores vitality, stabilizes the nervous system and equalizes the pull of oppositional forces. Yoga done for this purpose not only is perfectly valid, but also is a necessary ground upon which to build a spiritual practice.
Yoga as a spiritual practice is an evolution of body, mind and spirit. It is simply the next, inevitable stage of building a stable container (body, asana, pranayama or meditation practice). It arises from a clear intention and as much evolutionary tension as you can handle without stressing out. The difference between yoga for health benefits and yoga spiritual evolution is your willingness to engage in and live in the inquiry of who you really are. This will radically change the act of finding center. Center will no longer be a place. Center becomes a portal to the universe.
If ever there was a season to engage at this level it is winter. Winter is the season of water. Water births new life. Winter is the season of the kidney. Kidney energy is your vitality. It is the strength of your body and your character. Kidneys also store and distribute your Essence. (This demands thinking beyond the anatomical functions of the organ and asks you to consider the archetype and its role the unfolding of the whole.)
On the personal physical level, you may be working to align the legs and pelvis so that your lower back releases and your kidneys loosen and relax. On the personal emotional level, you may then discover that you are less fearful or that you startle less. On the personal mental level, you may flash back onto times in your childhood when you became frightened and began unconscious patterns of holding your breath or armoring with your muscles. As you live with the inquiry of who you are, you realize this is not you.
On the impersonal level, you may experience increased feelings of freedom, transparency and wisdom. You are awakening. You are living more and more in the realm of the superconscious.
With palms together,

Asana of the Month – Pachymotanasana
Great Western Stretch
The key to getting results from this pose is to make firm chest to thigh contact, align the legs and feet ( feet to the wall or a block gives great information), and to drive the pose forward off the coccyx toward the pubic bone. Increase the angle of the hip fold rather than concentrating on straightening the legs. This will create the kidney heat that makes you pliant. Energetically, it gives you an open root chakra and begins the flow of the kundalini shakti up the vertical current known as the sushumna.
Try all four variations pictured below, 20 breaths each. When releasing from each variation, lengthen the spine out and up, find the backbend to bring you up to Dandasana. Reverse plank or an easy reclining side twist are counterposes.
Do not do these poses if you have acute low back pain.
1. Forward Bend – 50 breaths, exit into Dandasana (staff pose) after
each repetition.
2. Forward Bend with 2 blocks under buttocks – 10 breaths
3. Forward Bend with 2 blocks under feet – 10 breaths
4. Forward Bend with rolled blanket or block between legs – 10 breaths
5.Ardhapurvottanasana (Half opening Pose) Lift off the pelvic floor to
create a long, hollow abdomen. Lift and open the chest into a slight
backbend.
6. Purvottanasana (Opening Pose) This is the forward bend counter pose.
Lean back on your hands with your wrists at 90 degrees. Get the soles
of the feet down; lift and open the chest. Your core remains supple and
energized.
7. Release to Dandasana (Staff Pose).
Caution: Unless you are working with a competent teacher or yoga
therapist, this cycle is contraindicated if you have active sciatica or
low back pain.

"Cultivate a sense of time as experienced and not merely measured, by living in tune with our own felt rhythms... to expand our notion of clock time with an appreciation for cosmic time. Where am I in my own daily, monthly and yearly cycles? Is this the time to make endings or to dare beginnings? If we live according to a mechanical clock, then our lives necessarily have a mechanical tone"
Thomas Moore, The Re-enchantment of Everyday Life.
